[616] **Whatever:** whoever, of whatever sort … .
**Bhikkhu:** … this is the bhikkhu intended in this meaning.
**Within a half-month:** less than a half-month.
**Should bathe:** he bathes with bath-powder (cuṇṇa) or with clay. In the effort there is an offense of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa); at the completion of the bathing, an offense of expiation (pācittiya).
**Except at the proper occasion:** setting aside the occasion.
**The hot occasion** is the remaining month and a half of the hot season. **The sweltering occasion** is the first month of the rains. Thus, [reckoning] these two and a half months as "the hot occasion, the sweltering occasion," one may bathe.
**The occasion of illness** is when one is not at ease without bathing. [Reckoning] "it is the occasion of illness," one may bathe.
**The occasion of work** is when, at the very least, even the courtyard has been swept. [Reckoning] "it is the occasion of work," one may bathe.
**The occasion of going on a journey:** [thinking] "I shall go half a yojana," one may bathe; while going, one may bathe; having gone, one may bathe.
**The occasion of wind and rain** is when bhikkhus have been covered by dust-laden wind, and two or three drops of rain have fallen on the body. [Reckoning] "it is the occasion of wind and rain," one may bathe.
