Vinayapiṭaka · Bhikkhu Vibhaṅga (2) · Vol. 2 · Section 677

[677] "Whoever" means: whoever, of whatever sort … . "Bhikkhu" means: … . This is the bhikkhu intended in this sense. "Knows" means: either he knows by himself, or others inform him, or that one himself informs him. "So expelled (nāsita)" means: expelled in this way. "Novice (samaṇuddesa)": one who is called a sāmaṇera. "Or should befriend him (upalāpeyya)": he befriends him, thinking, "I shall give him a bowl, or a robe, or recitation (uddesa), or interrogation (paripucchā)" — an offense of pācittiya. "Or should have himself attended by him (upaṭṭhāpeyya)": he consents to bath-powder, clay, tooth-wood, or water for rinsing the mouth from him — an offense of pācittiya. "Or should share enjoyment with him (sambhuñjeyya)": as to sharing (sambhoga) — there are two kinds of sharing: the sharing of material things and the sharing of Dhamma. The sharing of material things: he gives or receives material things — an offense of pācittiya. The sharing of Dhamma: he recites, or has [the other] recite. If he recites or has [the other] recite by the line, then for each line there is an offense of pācittiya. If he recites or has [the other] recite by the syllable, then for each syllable there is an offense of pācittiya. "Or should share a sleeping place with him": under the same roof, when the expelled novice is lying down and the bhikkhu lies down — an offense of pācittiya. When the bhikkhu is lying down and the expelled novice lies down — an offense of pācittiya. Or if both lie down [together] — an offense of pācittiya. Having risen, if they lie down again and again — an offense of pācittiya [each time].
