[731] At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in the Jetavana, Anāthapiṇḍika's park. Now at that time King Pasenadi of Kosala commanded the keeper of the pleasure garden: "Go, my man, put the garden in order; we shall visit the garden." "Even so, sire," the garden keeper replied to King Pasenadi of Kosala, and while putting the garden in order he saw the Blessed One seated at the foot of a certain tree. Having seen him, he approached King Pasenadi of Kosala; having approached, he said this to King Pasenadi of Kosala: "The garden is in order, sire; moreover, the Blessed One is seated there." "Let it be so, my man; we shall pay respects to the Blessed One."
Then King Pasenadi of Kosala, having gone to the garden, approached the Blessed One. Now at that time a certain lay follower (upāsaka) was seated attending upon the Blessed One. King Pasenadi of Kosala saw that lay follower seated attending upon the Blessed One; having seen him, he stood there afraid. Then it occurred to King Pasenadi of Kosala: "This man cannot be wicked, since he attends upon the Blessed One." He approached the Blessed One; having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, he sat down at one side. Then that lay follower, out of reverence for the Blessed One, neither paid homage to King Pasenadi of Kosala nor rose up for him. Then King Pasenadi of Kosala was displeased, thinking: "How indeed can this man, when I have come, neither pay homage nor rise up?"
Then the Blessed One, knowing that King Pasenadi of Kosala was displeased, said this to King Pasenadi of Kosala: "Great king, this lay follower is greatly learned, one to whom the scriptural tradition has come down (āgatāgama), devoid of lust for sensual pleasures." Then it occurred to King Pasenadi of Kosala: "This lay follower cannot be an inferior person; even the Blessed One speaks his praise." He said this to that lay follower: "Lay follower, you may tell me whatever you have need of." "Very good, sire."
Then the Blessed One instructed, roused, inspired, and gladdened King Pasenadi of Kosala with a talk on the Dhamma. Then King Pasenadi of Kosala, having been instructed, roused, inspired, and gladdened by the Blessed One with a talk on the Dhamma, rose from his seat, paid homage to the Blessed One, circumambulated him keeping his right side toward him, and departed.
