[741] "Whoever" (yo pana): whoever, of whatever sort … . "Bhikkhu": … this one is the bhikkhu intended in this meaning.
What is called a "treasure" (ratana) is: pearl, gem, beryl, conch, quartz-stone, coral, silver, gold, ruby, cat's-eye gem — this is called a treasure.¹
What is called "regarded as a treasure" (ratanasammata) is: whatever serves for people's use and enjoyment — this is called what is regarded as a treasure.
"Except within a monastery or within a dwelling": setting aside what is within a monastery, within a dwelling.
"Within a monastery" (ajjhārāma) means: for a monastery that is enclosed, the interior of the monastery; for one that is unenclosed, its precincts (upacāra).
"Within a dwelling" (ajjhāvasatha) means: for a dwelling that is enclosed, the interior of the dwelling; for one that is unenclosed, its precincts.
"Should pick up" (uggaṇheyya): he takes it himself — an offense of pācittiya.
"Should cause to be picked up" (uggaṇhāpeyya): he causes another to take it — an offense of pācittiya.
