[742] **"But a bhikkhu, having picked up, or having had picked up, a treasure or what is considered a treasure, within a monastery or within a dwelling, should keep it in deposit"** means: having made an identifying mark by its form or by a distinguishing sign, and having put it away, he should announce: "Whoever has lost goods, let him come." If someone comes there, he should be asked: "Friend, of what kind is your article?" If he identifies it correctly by its form or by a distinguishing sign, it should be given to him. If he does not identify it correctly, he should be told: "Search for it yourself, friend." When departing from that residence, he should deposit it in the hands of suitable bhikkhus who are there, and then depart. If there are no suitable bhikkhus, he should deposit it in the hands of suitable householders who are there, and then depart.
**"This is the proper procedure (sāmīci) in that case"** means: this is conduct in conformity with the rule (anudhammatā) in that case.
