[745] Now at that time several bhikkhus, traveling to Sāvatthī in the Kosalan country, arrived at a certain village in the evening. The people, seeing those bhikkhus, said this: "Enter, venerable sirs." Then those bhikkhus, being scrupulous, thinking, "Entering a village at the wrong time (vikāla) has been prohibited by the Blessed One," did not enter. Robbers robbed those bhikkhus. Then those bhikkhus, having gone to Sāvatthī, reported this matter to the bhikkhus. The bhikkhus reported this matter to the Blessed One.
Then the Blessed One, having given a talk on the Dhamma in connection with that cause, in connection with that occasion, addressed the bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus, I allow one to enter a village at the wrong time after asking leave (āpucchā). And thus, bhikkhus, you should recite this training rule (sikkhāpada):
"Whatever bhikkhu should enter a village at the wrong time without asking leave, there is an offense of pācittiya."
And thus this training rule came to be laid down by the Blessed One for the bhikkhus.
