[746] Now at that time a certain bhikkhu, traveling to Sāvatthī in the Kosalan country, arrived at a certain village in the evening. The people, seeing that bhikkhu, said this: "Enter, venerable sir." Then that bhikkhu, being scrupulous — thinking, "It has been prohibited by the Blessed One to enter a village at the wrong time (vikāla) without taking leave" — did not enter. Robbers robbed that bhikkhu. Then that bhikkhu, having gone to Sāvatthī, informed the bhikkhus of this matter. The bhikkhus informed the Blessed One of this matter.
Then the Blessed One, having given a talk on the Dhamma with reference to that origin, with reference to that occasion, addressed the bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus, I allow entering a village at the wrong time after taking leave of a bhikkhu who is present. And thus, bhikkhus, you should recite this training rule (sikkhāpada):
'Whatever bhikkhu should enter a village at the wrong time without taking leave of a bhikkhu who is present, there is an offense of pācittiya.'"
And thus this training rule was laid down by the Blessed One for the bhikkhus.
