[747] Now at that time a certain bhikkhu had been bitten by a snake. Another bhikkhu went toward the village, thinking, "I will fetch fire." Then that bhikkhu, being scrupulous, did not enter, thinking: "It has been prohibited by the Blessed One to enter the village at the wrong time (vikāla) without taking leave of a bhikkhu who is present." He reported this matter to the Blessed One.
Then the Blessed One, with reference to this origin, with reference to this occasion, having given a talk on the Dhamma, addressed the bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus, I allow, when there is such an urgent matter to be done, entering the village at the wrong time without taking leave of a bhikkhu who is present. And thus, bhikkhus, you should recite this training rule (sikkhāpada):
'Whatever bhikkhu should enter the village at the wrong time without taking leave of a bhikkhu who is present, except on account of such an urgent matter to be done, there is an offense of pācittiya.'"
