[756] "New" is said with reference to the making.
"Bed" (mañca): there are four kinds of beds — the masāraka (one with the frame slotted into the legs), the bundikābaddha (one with the frame joined as one piece with the legs), the kuḷirapādaka (one with curved, crab-claw legs), and the āhaccapādaka (one with detachable legs fitted onto the frame).
"Bench" (pīṭha): there are four kinds of benches — the masāraka (one with the frame slotted into the legs), the bundikābaddha (one with the frame joined as one piece with the legs), the kuḷirapādaka (one with curved, crab-claw legs), and the āhaccapādaka (one with detachable legs fitted onto the frame).
"Having it made" means: making it himself or causing it to be made.
"It should be made with legs eight fingerbreadths high by the Sugata fingerbreadth, except for the lower frame (aṭani)" means: setting aside the lower frame.
If he makes it, or has it made, exceeding that measure, in the act of doing so there is an offense of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa); upon obtaining it, having cut it down, the offense of expiation (pācittiya) should be confessed.
