[755] At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's park. Now at that time the Venerable Upananda the Sakyan was lying upon a high bed. Then the Blessed One, wandering on a tour of the lodgings together with many bhikkhus, approached the dwelling of the Venerable Upananda the Sakyan. The Venerable Upananda the Sakyan saw the Blessed One coming from afar; having seen him, he said this to the Blessed One: "Let the Blessed One come, venerable sir; let him see my bed."
Then the Blessed One, turning back from that very spot, addressed the bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus, a foolish person (moghapurisa) is to be known from his lodging." Then the Blessed One, having rebuked the Venerable Upananda the Sakyan in many ways for his being difficult to support …
"And thus, bhikkhus, you should recite this training rule (sikkhāpada):
'When a bhikkhu is having a new bed or bench made, it is to be made with legs eight finger-breadths [high], by the Sugata finger-breadth, excluding the lower frame. For one who exceeds that, there is a pācittiya [offense] entailing cutting down.'"
