[764] Now at that time the Venerable Udāyi had a large body. Having spread out a sitting cloth (nisīdana) in front of the Blessed One, he sat stretching it out on all sides. Then the Blessed One said this to the Venerable Udāyi: "Why, Udāyi, having spread out a sitting cloth, do you stretch it out on all sides, like an old leather-worker (purāṇasikoṭṭha)?"
"It is, venerable sir, because the sitting cloth allowed by the Blessed One to the bhikkhus is too small."
Then the Blessed One, having given a talk on the Dhamma with reference to that occasion, with reference to that incident, addressed the bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus, I allow for the sitting cloth a border (dasā) of one span. And thus, bhikkhus, you should recite this training rule:
'When a bhikkhu is having a sitting cloth made, it must be made to the proper measure. Herein this is the measure: in length, two spans of the Sugata-span; in breadth, one and a half; the border, one span. For one who exceeds that, there is a pācittiya entailing cutting.'"
