[794] At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling among the Sakyans at Kapilavatthu, in the Nigrodhārāma. Now at that time the slaves of the Sakyans had risen in revolt. The Sakyan women wished to prepare a meal at the forest lodgings. The Sakyan slaves heard: "It is said that the Sakyan women wish to prepare a meal at the forest lodgings." They lay in ambush on the road. The Sakyan women, taking choice food, hard and soft, went to a forest lodging. The Sakyan slaves came out, robbed the Sakyan women, and violated them. The Sakyans went out, seized those robbers together with the goods, and they criticized, complained, and spread it about, saying: "How indeed can the venerable ones not announce it when robbers are dwelling in the monastery grounds?"
Bhikkhus heard the Sakyans criticizing, complaining, and spreading it about. Then those bhikkhus reported this matter to the Blessed One. Then the Blessed One, having given a talk on the Dhamma with reference to that origin, with reference to that occasion, addressed the bhikkhus: "Well then, bhikkhus, I shall lay down a training rule (sikkhāpada) for bhikkhus, based on ten reasons: for the excellence of the Saṅgha … for the stability of the true Dhamma, and for the support of the Vinaya. And thus, bhikkhus, you should recite this training rule:
'Whatever forest lodgings there are that are agreed to be risky and attended with danger — should any bhikkhu, while dwelling in such lodgings, with his own hand accept within the monastery precincts food, hard or soft, that has not been announced beforehand, and chew it or eat it, it is to be acknowledged by that bhikkhu thus: "Friend (āvuso), I have committed a blameworthy act, unsuitable, one that ought to be acknowledged (pāṭidesanīya); I acknowledge it."'"
And thus this training rule was laid down by the Blessed One for the bhikkhus.
