[796] **"Now, those lodgings which are wilderness [lodgings]"**: a lodging (senāsana) called "wilderness" is one at least five hundred bow-lengths [from a village]. **"Risky" (sāsaṅka)** means: in the monastery (ārāma) or in the vicinity of the monastery a place where thieves have encamped is seen, a place where they have eaten is seen, a place where they have stood is seen, a place where they have sat is seen, a place where they have lain down is seen. **"Dangerous" (sappaṭibhaya)** means: in the monastery or in the vicinity of the monastery people are seen who have been killed by thieves, are seen who have been plundered, are seen who have been beaten. **"Whatever"**: whoever, of whatever sort … **"Bhikkhu"**: … this is the bhikkhu intended in this meaning. **"In such lodgings"**: in lodgings of that kind. **"Not announced"** means: an announcement made through the five [co-religionists] — that is called not announced. An announcement made setting aside the monastery and the vicinity of the monastery [i.e., made elsewhere] — that is called not announced. **"Announced"** means: some woman or man, having come to the monastery or to the vicinity of the monastery, announces: "Venerable sir, non-staple food (khādanīya) or staple food (bhojanīya) will be brought for [the bhikkhu] named so-and-so." If it is risky, it should be told: "It is risky." If it is dangerous, it should be told: "It is dangerous." If he says, "Let it be, venerable sir; it will be brought," the thieves should be told: "People frequent this place; withdraw." When gruel (yāgu) has been announced, and its accompaniments are brought — that counts as announced. When a meal (bhatta) has been announced, and its accompaniments are brought — that counts as announced. When non-staple food has been announced, and its accompaniments are brought — that counts as announced. When announcement has been made in respect of a family, and the people in that family bring non-staple or staple food — that counts as announced. When announcement has been made in respect of a village, and the people in that village bring non-staple or staple food — that counts as announced. When announcement has been made in respect of a guild (pūga), and the people in that guild bring non-staple or staple food — that counts as announced. **"Non-staple food"** means: setting aside the five staples, and what is allowable for a watch of the night (yāmakālika), for seven days (sattāhakālika), and for as long as life lasts (yāvajīvika), the rest is called non-staple food. **"Staple food"** means: the five staples — boiled rice, kummāsa (milk-porridge), sattu (flour-meal), fish, and meat. **"Within the monastery"** means: for an enclosed monastery, the inside of the monastery; for an unenclosed one, the vicinity. **"Not ill"** means: one able to walk for alms. **"Ill"** means: one not able to walk for alms. If one who is not ill accepts what has not been announced, [thinking] "I shall chew it, I shall eat it," there is an offense of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa). For every mouthful swallowed, there is an offense to be acknowledged (pāṭidesanīya).
