[801] Origin at Sāvatthī.¹ Now at that time the group-of-six bhikkhus put on their upper robes hanging down in front and hanging down behind. … "I will put on my upper robe even all around (parimaṇḍala)": thus the training is to be undertaken.
The upper robe is to be put on even all around, making both edges level. Whoever, out of disrespect (anādariya), puts on the upper robe hanging down in front or hanging down behind, incurs an offense of wrongdoing (dukkaṭa).
There is no offense: if it is unintentional; if he is unmindful; if he does not know; if he is ill; in emergencies; if he is insane; if he is the first offender (ādikammika).
¹ Where the Pali reads "Sāvatthīnidāna," it stands for: "At that time the Blessed One was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's monastery."
