[83] "New" (navaṃ) is said with reference to the making.
"Felt rug" (santhataṃ) means: it is made by spreading [the wool], not woven.
"When making" (kārayamānena) means: either making it himself or having it made.
"Two parts of pure black sheep's wool (eḷakaloma) are to be taken" means: having weighed them, two tulās of pure black sheep's wool[1] are to be taken.
"A third [part] of white" means: a tulā of white.
"A fourth [part] of ruddy-brown (gocariya)" means: a tulā of ruddy-brown.
"If a bhikkhu, without taking two parts of pure black sheep's wool, a third of white, a fourth of ruddy-brown" means: not having taken [2] a tulā of white and a tulā of ruddy-brown, he makes or has made a new felt rug — in the effort [of making] there is an offence of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa); upon acquisition it becomes subject to forfeiture (nissaggiya); it is to be forfeited to the Saṅgha, to a group, or to an individual. "And thus, bhikkhus, it is to be forfeited …" — "Venerable sirs, this felt rug of mine, had made without taking [2] a tulā of white and a tulā of ruddy-brown, is to be forfeited; I forfeit it to the Saṅgha." … "should give …" … "they should give …" … "I give it to the venerable one."
