[94] **Sitting cloth (nisīdana)** means: one having a border is what is meant.
**Rug (santhata)** means: it is made by spreading [i.e., felting], not woven.
**Should have made** means: making it himself or having it made.
**Old rug (purāṇasanthata)** means: one worn even once as a lower garment, or worn even once as an upper garment.
**"A sugata-span (sugatavidatthi) from around the border must be taken for the purpose of disfigurement"** means: for the sake of durability, having cut a round or a square piece, it should be spread in one part [of the new rug]; or having unravelled it, it should be spread [mixed in].
**"If a bhikkhu, without taking a sugata-span from around the border of the old rug"** means: not having taken a sugata-span from around the border of the old rug, he makes or has made a new sitting rug — in the effort there is an offense of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa); upon acquisition it becomes subject to forfeiture (nissaggiya); it must be forfeited to a Saṅgha, or to a group, or to an individual.
