[79] **"Whatever (yo pana)"** means: whoever, of whatever sort … **"Bhikkhu"** means: … this is the bhikkhu intended in this sense here.
**"Black" (kāḷaka):** there are two kinds of black — black by nature (jātiyā kāḷakaṃ) or black by dyeing (rajanakāḷakaṃ).
**"Felt rug" (santhata):** it is made by spreading out [the wool]; it is not woven.
**"Should have made" (kārāpeyya):** he makes it himself or has it made — in the effort there is an offence of wrongdoing (dukkaṭa); on obtaining it, it becomes subject to forfeiture (nissaggiya): it must be forfeited to the Saṅgha, or to a group (gaṇa), or to an individual.
"And thus, bhikkhus, should it be forfeited: … 'Venerable sir, this felt rug of purely black sheep's wool, which I had made, is to be forfeited; I forfeit it to the Saṅgha.' … 'should give' … 'should give' … 'I give this to the venerable one.'"
