Vinayapiṭaka · Bhikkhu Vibhaṅga (2) · Vol. 2 · Section 170

[170] **"Whatever"** means: whoever, of whatever sort … **"Bhikkhu"** means: … this is the bhikkhu intended in this sense. **"Knows"** means: either he knows by himself, or others inform him, or that person [the donor] informs him. **"Belonging to the Saṅgha (saṅghika)"** means: it has been given to, relinquished to, the Saṅgha. **"Gain (lābha)"** means: robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicinal requisites for the sick; even so much as a lump of bath-powder, a tooth-stick, or thread from a fringe. **"Allocated (pariṇata)"** means: the words "we shall give, we shall make" have been uttered. He diverts it to himself: in the effort, there is an offense of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa). Upon obtaining it, it becomes subject to forfeiture (nissaggiya); it is to be forfeited to a Saṅgha, or to a group, or to an individual. "And thus, bhikkhus, should it be forfeited: … 'Venerable sirs, this gain, allocated to the Saṅgha, which I, knowing [it to be such], have diverted to myself, is to be forfeited. I forfeit it to the Saṅgha.' … 'should give' … 'should give [it back]' … 'I give this to the venerable one.'" When it has been allocated, and he perceives it as allocated, and he diverts it to himself: an offense of pācittiya entailing forfeiture (nissaggiya pācittiya). When it has been allocated, and he is in doubt, and he diverts it to himself: an offense of wrong-doing. When it has been allocated, and he perceives it as not allocated, and he diverts it to himself: no offense. When it has been allocated to a Saṅgha, and he diverts it to another Saṅgha or to a shrine (cetiya): an offense of wrong-doing. When it has been allocated to a shrine, and he diverts it to another shrine, or to a Saṅgha, or to a group, or to an individual: an offense of wrong-doing. When it has been allocated to an individual, and he diverts it to another individual, or to a Saṅgha, or to a group, or to a shrine: an offense of wrong-doing. When it has not been allocated, and he perceives it as allocated: an offense of wrong-doing. When it has not been allocated, and he is in doubt: an offense of wrong-doing. When it has not been allocated, and he perceives it as not allocated: no offense.
