[836] The origin at Sāvatthī. Now at that time the group-of-six bhikkhus, having requested curry (sūpa) and boiled rice for their own benefit, ate them. People were annoyed, complained, and spread it about: "How can the ascetics, sons of the Sakyans, eat curry and boiled rice having requested them for their own benefit? To whom is well-prepared food not agreeable? To whom is tasty food not pleasing?" Bhikkhus heard those people being annoyed, complaining, and spreading it about. Those bhikkhus who were of few wishes … they were annoyed, complained, and spread it about: "How can the group-of-six bhikkhus eat curry and boiled rice having requested them for their own benefit?" … "Is it true, bhikkhus, that you eat curry and boiled rice having requested them for your own benefit?" "It is true, Blessed One." The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked them: "How can you, foolish men, eat curry and boiled rice having requested them for your own benefit? This, foolish men, is neither for the confidence of those without confidence, nor for the increase of those already confident …" "And thus, bhikkhus, you should recite this training rule (sikkhāpada): 'I shall not eat curry or boiled rice having requested it for my own benefit' — this is a training to be undertaken." And thus this training rule was laid down by the Blessed One for the bhikkhus.
