[857] The setting at Sāvatthī (Sāvatthīnidānaṃ). Now at that time the group-of-six bhikkhus (chabbaggiyā bhikkhū) taught the Dhamma to a person with an umbrella in his hand. Those bhikkhus who were of few wishes (appicchā) … criticized, denounced, and spread it about, saying: "How can the group-of-six bhikkhus teach the Dhamma to a person with an umbrella in his hand?" …
"Is it true, as they say, bhikkhus, that you teach the Dhamma to a person with an umbrella in his hand?"
"It is true, Blessed One."
The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked them: "How can you, foolish men (moghapurisā), teach the Dhamma to a person with an umbrella in his hand? This, foolish men, does not conduce to the confidence of those without confidence, nor to the increase of confidence in those already confident …
"And thus, bhikkhus, you should recite this training rule (sikkhāpada): 'I will not teach the Dhamma to a person with an umbrella in his hand'—a training to be observed."
And thus this training rule was laid down by the Blessed One for the bhikkhus.
