[880] Venerable sirs, these seven principles for the settlement of legal issues (adhikaraṇasamatha) come up for recitation.
For the settling and stilling of legal issues whenever they arise: a verdict in the presence (sammukhāvinaya) is to be given; a verdict of mindfulness (sativinaya) is to be given; a verdict of past insanity (amūḷhavinaya) is to be given; acting upon acknowledgment (paṭiññāya kāretabbaṃ); decision by majority (yebhuyyasikā); a verdict of aggravated misconduct against the one at fault (tassapāpiyasikā); and covering over as with grass (tiṇavatthāraka).
Venerable sirs, the seven principles for the settlement of legal issues have been recited. Herein I ask the venerable ones: Are you pure in this matter? A second time I ask: Are you pure in this matter? A third time I ask: Are you pure in this matter? The venerable ones are pure herein; therefore they are silent. Thus I hold this to be so.
