[249] Bhikkhus, there are these two things (dhammā) that cause torment. What two? Here, bhikkhus, someone has done misconduct by body (kāyaduccarita) and has not done good conduct by body (kāyasucarita); has done misconduct by speech (vacīduccarita) and has not done good conduct by speech (vacīsucarita); has done misconduct by mind (manoduccarita) and has not done good conduct by mind (manosucarita). He is tormented, thinking, "I have done misconduct by body"; he is tormented, thinking, "I have not done good conduct by body"; he is tormented, thinking, "I have done misconduct by speech"; he is tormented, thinking, "I have not done good conduct by speech"; he is tormented, thinking, "I have done misconduct by mind"; he is tormented, thinking, "I have not done good conduct by mind." These, bhikkhus, are the two things that cause torment.
