[287] Bhikkhus, there are these two assemblies (parisā). What two? The shallow assembly and the deep assembly. And what, bhikkhus, is the shallow assembly? Here, bhikkhus, in whatever assembly the bhikkhus are restless, haughty, fickle, harsh-tongued, rambling in their talk, muddle-minded with lapsed mindfulness, lacking clear comprehension, unconcentrated, with wandering minds (citta), and with faculties unrestrained — this, bhikkhus, is called the shallow assembly. And what, bhikkhus, is the deep assembly? Here, bhikkhus, in whatever assembly the bhikkhus are not restless, not haughty, not fickle, not harsh-tongued, not rambling in their talk, with mindfulness established, clearly comprehending, concentrated, with one-pointed minds, and with faculties restrained — this, bhikkhus, is called the deep assembly. These, bhikkhus, are the two assemblies. Of these two assemblies, bhikkhus, the deep assembly is the foremost.
