[286] Bhikkhus, those bhikkhus who exclude the meaning (attha) and the Dhamma by means of badly grasped discourses (suttanta) whose phrasing is a mere semblance (byañjanapaṭirūpaka) — those bhikkhus, bhikkhus, are practicing for the harm of many people, for the unhappiness of many people, for the loss, harm, and suffering (dukkha) of many folk, of devas and humans; and those bhikkhus, bhikkhus, generate much demerit (apuñña), and they cause this true Dhamma (saddhamma) to disappear.
Bhikkhus, those bhikkhus who conform to the meaning and the Dhamma by means of well-grasped discourses whose phrasing is rightly presented — those bhikkhus, bhikkhus, are practicing for the welfare of many people, for the happiness of many people, for the good, welfare, and happiness of many folk, of devas and humans; and those bhikkhus, bhikkhus, generate much merit (puñña), and they establish this true Dhamma.
