[294] Bhikkhus, there are these two assemblies. What two? The discordant assembly and the harmonious assembly.
And what, bhikkhus, is the discordant assembly? Here, bhikkhus, in whatever assembly acts contrary to the Dhamma proceed and acts in accordance with the Dhamma do not proceed, acts contrary to the Discipline (vinaya) proceed and acts in accordance with the Discipline do not proceed; acts contrary to the Dhamma flourish and acts in accordance with the Dhamma do not flourish, acts contrary to the Discipline flourish and acts in accordance with the Discipline do not flourish — this, bhikkhus, is called the discordant assembly. Because the assembly is discordant, bhikkhus, acts contrary to the Dhamma proceed and acts in accordance with the Dhamma do not proceed, acts contrary to the Discipline proceed and acts in accordance with the Discipline do not proceed; acts contrary to the Dhamma flourish and acts in accordance with the Dhamma do not flourish, acts contrary to the Discipline flourish and acts in accordance with the Discipline do not flourish.
And what, bhikkhus, is the harmonious assembly? Here, bhikkhus, in whatever assembly acts in accordance with the Dhamma proceed and acts contrary to the Dhamma do not proceed, acts in accordance with the Discipline proceed and acts contrary to the Discipline do not proceed; acts in accordance with the Dhamma flourish and acts contrary to the Dhamma do not flourish, acts in accordance with the Discipline flourish and acts contrary to the Discipline do not flourish — this, bhikkhus, is called the harmonious assembly. Because the assembly is harmonious, bhikkhus, acts in accordance with the Dhamma proceed and acts contrary to the Dhamma do not proceed, acts in accordance with the Discipline proceed and acts contrary to the Discipline do not proceed; acts in accordance with the Dhamma flourish and acts contrary to the Dhamma do not flourish, acts in accordance with the Discipline flourish and acts contrary to the Discipline do not flourish.
These, bhikkhus, are the two assemblies. Of these two assemblies, bhikkhus, the foremost is the harmonious assembly.
