[382] Bhikkhus, practising wrongly toward two, the fool, the incompetent one, the untrue person (asappurisa) keeps himself maimed and injured; he is blameworthy and reprehensible to the wise, and he generates much demerit (apuñña). Toward which two? Toward the Tathāgata and toward a disciple of the Tathāgata. Bhikkhus, practising wrongly toward these two, the fool, the incompetent one, the untrue person keeps himself maimed and injured; he is blameworthy and reprehensible to the wise, and he generates much demerit.
Bhikkhus, practising rightly toward two, the wise one, the competent one, the true person (sappurisa) keeps himself unmaimed and uninjured; he is blameless and irreproachable to the wise, and he generates much merit (puñña). Toward which two? Toward the Tathāgata and toward a disciple of the Tathāgata. Bhikkhus, practising rightly toward these two, the wise one, the competent one, the true person keeps himself unmaimed and uninjured; he is blameless and irreproachable to the wise, and he generates much merit.
