[443] 4. Bhikkhus, one possessed of three qualities should be known as a fool (bāla). Which three? He does not see a transgression (accaya) as a transgression; having seen a transgression as a transgression, he does not make amends in accordance with the Dhamma; and when another is confessing a transgression to him, he does not accept it in accordance with the Dhamma. Bhikkhus, one possessed of these three qualities should be known as a fool.
Bhikkhus, one possessed of three qualities should be known as a wise person (paṇḍita). Which three? He sees a transgression as a transgression; having seen a transgression as a transgression, he makes amends in accordance with the Dhamma; and when another is confessing a transgression to him, he accepts it in accordance with the Dhamma. Bhikkhus, one possessed of these three qualities should be known as a wise person.
