[458] Bhikkhus, a shopkeeper possessed of three factors is incapable of acquiring wealth not yet acquired, or of increasing wealth already acquired. What three? Here, bhikkhus, a shopkeeper does not diligently apply himself to his work in the morning, does not diligently apply himself to his work at midday, and does not diligently apply himself to his work in the evening. Possessed of these three factors, bhikkhus, a shopkeeper is incapable of acquiring wealth not yet acquired, or of increasing wealth already acquired. Just so, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu possessed of three qualities is incapable of attaining a wholesome state (kusala dhamma) not yet attained, or of increasing a wholesome state already attained. What three? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu does not diligently attend to the sign of concentration (samādhinimitta) in the morning, does not diligently attend to the sign of concentration at midday, and does not diligently attend to the sign of concentration in the evening. Possessed of these three qualities, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is incapable of attaining a wholesome state not yet attained, or of increasing a wholesome state already attained.
