[457] "Bhikkhus, if wanderers of other sects (aññatitthiyā paribbājakā) should ask you thus: 'Friends, does the ascetic Gotama live the holy life (brahmacariya) for the sake of rebirth in the heavenly world (devaloka)?' — being asked thus, would you not be distressed, ashamed, and disgusted?"
"Yes, venerable sir."
"So it seems, bhikkhus, that you are distressed, ashamed, and disgusted by a divine life-span; by divine beauty, by divine happiness, by divine fame, by divine supremacy you are distressed, ashamed, and disgusted. How much more, then, bhikkhus, should you be distressed, ashamed, and disgusted by misconduct by body; by misconduct by speech ...; by misconduct by mind you should be distressed, ashamed, and disgusted."
