[521] Bhikkhus, there are these three tasks of an ascetic (samaṇa) that are to be done by an ascetic. What three? The undertaking of the training in higher morality (adhisīlasikkhā-samādāna), the undertaking of the training in higher mentality (adhicittasikkhā-samādāna), and the undertaking of the training in higher wisdom (adhipaññāsikkhā-samādāna). These, bhikkhus, are the three tasks of an ascetic that are to be done by an ascetic.
Therefore, bhikkhus, you should train thus: "Keen shall be our zeal (chanda) for the undertaking of the training in higher morality; keen shall be our zeal for the undertaking of the training in higher mentality; keen shall be our zeal for the undertaking of the training in higher wisdom." Thus indeed, bhikkhus, should you train.
