[522] "Bhikkhus, suppose a donkey followed close behind a herd of cattle, thinking: 'I too am a cow! I too am a cow!' But its color is not like that of the cattle, its voice is not like that of the cattle, its footprint is not like that of the cattle. It merely follows close behind the herd of cattle, thinking: 'I too am a cow! I too am a cow!'
"In the same way, bhikkhus, here a certain bhikkhu follows close behind the Saṅgha of bhikkhus, claiming: 'I too am a bhikkhu! I too am a bhikkhu!' But he does not have such zeal (chanda) for undertaking the training in higher morality (adhisīla-sikkhā) as the other bhikkhus have; he does not have such zeal for undertaking the training in higher mentality (adhicitta-sikkhā) as the other bhikkhus have; he does not have such zeal for undertaking the training in higher wisdom (adhipaññā-sikkhā) as the other bhikkhus have. He merely follows close behind the Saṅgha of bhikkhus, claiming: 'I too am a bhikkhu! I too am a bhikkhu!'
"Therefore, bhikkhus, you should train thus: 'Keen shall be our zeal for undertaking the training in higher morality; keen shall be our zeal for undertaking the training in higher mentality; keen shall be our zeal for undertaking the training in higher wisdom.' Thus, bhikkhus, should you train."
