[546] (Siam Raṭṭha Pali §107) "Bhikkhus, whatever ascetics or brahmins do not understand as it really is the gratification (assāda) of the world as gratification, the danger (ādīnava) of the world as danger, and the escape (nissaraṇa) from the world as escape — those, bhikkhus, I do not consider to be ascetics among ascetics or brahmins among brahmins; nor do those venerable ones, in this very life, realize for themselves with direct knowledge (abhiññā) the goal of asceticism (sāmaññattha) and the goal of brahminhood (brahmaññattha), and enter upon and dwell in that goal.
But, bhikkhus, whatever ascetics or brahmins understand as it really is the gratification of the world as gratification, the danger of the world as danger, and the escape from the world as escape — those, bhikkhus, I do consider to be ascetics among ascetics and brahmins among brahmins; and those venerable ones, in this very life, having realized for themselves with direct knowledge the goal of asceticism and the goal of brahminhood, enter upon and dwell in that goal."
