[557] [118] Bhikkhus, there are these three failures. What three? Failure in virtue, failure in mind, and failure in view.
And what, bhikkhus, is failure in virtue? Here, bhikkhus, a certain person destroys life, takes what is not given, engages in sexual misconduct, speaks falsely, speaks maliciously, speaks harshly, and indulges in frivolous talk. This, bhikkhus, is called failure in virtue.
And what, bhikkhus, is failure in mind? Here, bhikkhus, a certain person is covetous and has a mind of ill will. This, bhikkhus, is called failure in mind.
And what, bhikkhus, is failure in view? Here, bhikkhus, a certain person holds wrong view, one whose view is distorted: "There is nothing given, nothing offered, nothing sacrificed; there is no fruit or result of good and bad actions; there is no this world, no other world; there is no mother, no father; there are no beings spontaneously reborn; there are in the world no ascetics and brahmins who are of right conduct and right practice, and who, having realized this world and the other world for themselves by direct knowledge, declare them." This, bhikkhus, is called failure in view.
Because of failure in virtue, bhikkhus, beings, with the breakup of the body, after death, are reborn in a state of loss, a bad destination, a place of ruin, hell. And what, bhikkhus, is accomplishment in mind? Here, bhikkhus, a certain person is without covetousness and has a mind free of ill will. This, bhikkhus, is called accomplishment in mind.
And what, bhikkhus, is accomplishment in view? Here, bhikkhus, a certain person holds right view, one whose view is undistorted: "There is what is given, what is offered, what is sacrificed; there is fruit and result of good and bad actions; there is this world and the other world; there is mother and father; there are beings spontaneously reborn; there are in the world ascetics and brahmins who are of right conduct and right practice, and who, having realized this world and the other world for themselves by direct knowledge, declare them." This, bhikkhus, is called accomplishment in view.
