[558] [119] "Bhikkhus, there are these three failures (vipatti). What three? Failure in virtue (sīlavipatti), failure in mind (cittavipatti), and failure in view (diṭṭhivipatti).
"And what, bhikkhus, is failure in virtue? Here, bhikkhus, someone destroys life … engages in frivolous talk. This, bhikkhus, is called failure in virtue.
"And what, bhikkhus, is failure in mind? Here, bhikkhus, someone is covetous and has a mind of ill will. This, bhikkhus, is called failure in mind.
"And what, bhikkhus, is failure in view? Here, bhikkhus, someone holds wrong view (micchādiṭṭhi), has a distorted vision: 'There is nothing given, nothing offered … there are no [ascetics and brahmins] who, having realized this world and the other world for themselves by direct knowledge (abhiññā), make them known.' This, bhikkhus, is called failure in view.
"Either because of failure in virtue, bhikkhus, beings, with the breakup of the body, after death, are reborn in a state of loss, a bad destination, a place of ruin, hell; or because of failure in mind …; or because of failure in view, bhikkhus, beings, with the breakup of the body, after death, are reborn in a state of loss, a bad destination, a place of ruin, hell.
"Just as, bhikkhus, an unfailing die (apaṇṇako maṇi), when thrown upward, rests firmly wherever it comes to rest, so too, bhikkhus, either because of failure in virtue beings, with the breakup of the body, after death, are reborn in a state of loss, a bad destination, a place of ruin, hell; or because of failure in mind …; or because of failure in view beings, with the breakup of the body, after death, are reborn in a state of loss, a bad destination, a place of ruin, hell. These, bhikkhus, are the three failures.
"Bhikkhus, there are these three accomplishments (sampadā). What three? Accomplishment in virtue (sīlasampadā), accomplishment in mind (cittasampadā), and accomplishment in view (diṭṭhisampadā).
"And what, bhikkhus, is accomplishment in virtue? Here, bhikkhus, someone abstains from the destruction of life … abstains from frivolous talk. This, bhikkhus, is called accomplishment in virtue.
"And what, bhikkhus, is accomplishment in mind? Here, bhikkhus, someone is without covetousness and has a mind without ill will. This, bhikkhus, is called accomplishment in mind.
"And what, bhikkhus, is accomplishment in view? Here, bhikkhus, someone holds right view (sammādiṭṭhi), has an undistorted vision: 'There is what is given, there is what is offered … there are [ascetics and brahmins] who, having realized this world and the other world for themselves by direct knowledge, make them known.' This, bhikkhus, is called accomplishment in view.
