[572] Bhikkhus, these three persons are found existing in the world. What three? The person like a line etched in stone, the person like a line etched in earth, and the person like a line etched in water.
And what, bhikkhus, is the person like a line etched in stone? Here, bhikkhus, a certain person becomes angry frequently, and that anger (kodha) of his lies latent for a long time. Just as, bhikkhus, a line etched in stone is not quickly erased by wind or water but lasts long, even so, bhikkhus, here a certain person becomes angry frequently, and that anger of his lies latent for a long time. This, bhikkhus, is called the person like a line etched in stone.
And what, bhikkhus, is the person like a line etched in earth? Here, bhikkhus, a certain person becomes angry frequently, but that anger of his does not lie latent for a long time. Just as, bhikkhus, a line etched in earth is quickly erased by wind or water and does not last long, even so, bhikkhus, here a certain person becomes angry frequently, but that anger of his does not lie latent for a long time. This, bhikkhus, is called the person like a line etched in earth.
And what, bhikkhus, is the person like a line etched in water? Here, bhikkhus, a certain person, even when spoken to vehemently, even when spoken to harshly, even when spoken to disagreeably, still remains united, still remains in concord, still remains on friendly terms. Just as, bhikkhus, a line etched in water quickly vanishes and does not last long, even so, bhikkhus, here a certain person, even when spoken to vehemently, even when spoken to harshly, even when spoken to disagreeably, still remains united, still remains in concord, still remains on friendly terms. This, bhikkhus, is called the person like a line etched in water.
These, bhikkhus, are the three persons found existing in the world.
