[128] Bhikkhus, with the appearance of a Tathāgata, an Arahant, a Fully Self-Enlightened One, four wonderful and marvellous things (acchariyā abbhutadhammā) appear. What four?
Bhikkhus, people (pajā) delight in attachment (ālaya), take pleasure in attachment, rejoice in attachment; yet when the Dhamma of non-attachment is being taught by the Tathāgata, they wish to listen, they lend an ear, they apply their minds to understand (aññā). Bhikkhus, with the appearance of a Tathāgata, an Arahant, a Fully Self-Enlightened One, this is the first wonderful and marvellous thing that appears.
Bhikkhus, people delight in conceit (māna), take pleasure in conceit, rejoice in conceit; yet when the Dhamma for the removal of conceit is being taught by the Tathāgata, they wish to listen, they lend an ear, they apply their minds to understand. Bhikkhus, with the appearance of a Tathāgata, an Arahant, a Fully Self-Enlightened One, this is the second wonderful and marvellous thing that appears.
Bhikkhus, people delight in the absence of peace (anupasama), take pleasure in the absence of peace, rejoice in the absence of peace; yet when the Dhamma conducive to peace (upasama) is being taught by the Tathāgata, they wish to listen, they lend an ear, they apply their minds to understand. Bhikkhus, with the appearance of a Tathāgata, an Arahant, a Fully Self-Enlightened One, this is the third wonderful and marvellous thing that appears.
Bhikkhus, people are immersed in ignorance (avijjā), become blind, enveloped by it; yet when the Dhamma for the removal of ignorance is being taught by the Tathāgata, they wish to listen, they lend an ear, they apply their minds to understand. Bhikkhus, with the appearance of a Tathāgata, an Arahant, a Fully Self-Enlightened One, this is the fourth wonderful and marvellous thing that appears.
