[129] Bhikkhus, there are these four wonderful and marvellous qualities (acchariyā abbhutadhammā) in Ānanda. What four? Bhikkhus, if an assembly of bhikkhus approaches to see Ānanda, that assembly is delighted even by the sight of him; and if Ānanda speaks the Dhamma there, that assembly is delighted even by what he says; and that assembly of bhikkhus, bhikkhus, is still unsatisfied when Ānanda falls silent. If an assembly of bhikkhunīs approaches to see Ānanda, that assembly is delighted even by the sight of him; and if Ānanda speaks the Dhamma there, that assembly is delighted even by what he says; and that assembly of bhikkhunīs, bhikkhus, is still unsatisfied when Ānanda falls silent. Bhikkhus, if an assembly of laymen (upāsakas) approaches to see Ānanda, that assembly is delighted even by the sight of him; and if Ānanda speaks the Dhamma there, that assembly is delighted even by what he says; and that assembly of laymen, bhikkhus, is still unsatisfied when Ānanda falls silent. Bhikkhus, if an assembly of laywomen (upāsikās) approaches to see Ānanda, that assembly is delighted even by the sight of him; and if Ānanda speaks the Dhamma there, that assembly is delighted even by what he says; and that assembly of laywomen, bhikkhus, is still unsatisfied when Ānanda falls silent. These, bhikkhus, are the four wonderful and marvellous qualities in Ānanda.
