[131] Bhikkhus, these four persons are found existing in the world. Which four? Here, bhikkhus, for a certain person the fetters (saṃyojana) pertaining to the lower world (orambhāgiyāni saññojanāni) are unabandoned, the fetters conducive to obtaining rebirth (uppattipaṭilābhikāni saññojanāni) are unabandoned, and the fetters conducive to obtaining existence (bhavapaṭilābhikāni saññojanāni) are unabandoned.
Here again, bhikkhus, for a certain person the fetters pertaining to the lower world are abandoned, but the fetters conducive to obtaining rebirth are unabandoned, and the fetters conducive to obtaining existence are unabandoned.
Here again, bhikkhus, for a certain person the fetters pertaining to the lower world are abandoned, the fetters conducive to obtaining rebirth are abandoned, but the fetters conducive to obtaining existence are unabandoned.
Here again, bhikkhus, for a certain person the fetters pertaining to the lower world are abandoned, the fetters conducive to obtaining rebirth are abandoned, and the fetters conducive to obtaining existence are abandoned.
For which person, bhikkhus, are the fetters pertaining to the lower world unabandoned, the fetters conducive to obtaining rebirth unabandoned, and the fetters conducive to obtaining existence unabandoned? For the once-returner (sakadāgāmī). For this person, bhikkhus, the fetters pertaining to the lower world are unabandoned, the fetters conducive to obtaining rebirth are unabandoned, and the fetters conducive to obtaining existence are unabandoned.
For which person, bhikkhus, are the fetters pertaining to the lower world abandoned, but the fetters conducive to obtaining rebirth unabandoned, and the fetters conducive to obtaining existence unabandoned? For the one bound upstream, heading to the Akaniṭṭha realm (uddhaṃsota akaniṭṭhagāmī). For this person, bhikkhus, the fetters pertaining to the lower world are abandoned, but the fetters conducive to obtaining rebirth are unabandoned, and the fetters conducive to obtaining existence are unabandoned.
For which person, bhikkhus, are the fetters pertaining to the lower world abandoned, the fetters conducive to obtaining rebirth abandoned, but the fetters conducive to obtaining existence unabandoned? For the attainer of Nibbāna in the interval (antarāparinibbāyī). For this person, bhikkhus, the fetters pertaining to the lower world are abandoned, the fetters conducive to obtaining rebirth are abandoned, but the fetters conducive to obtaining existence are unabandoned.
For which person, bhikkhus, are the fetters pertaining to the lower world abandoned, the fetters conducive to obtaining rebirth abandoned, and the fetters conducive to obtaining existence abandoned? For the arahant whose taints (āsava) are destroyed (arahā khīṇāsavo). For this person, bhikkhus, the fetters pertaining to the lower world are abandoned, the fetters conducive to obtaining rebirth are abandoned, and the fetters conducive to obtaining existence are abandoned.
These, bhikkhus, are the four persons found existing in the world.
