[167] Then the Venerable Sāriputta approached the Venerable Mahāmoggallāna; having approached, he exchanged greetings with the Venerable Mahāmoggallāna, and when the courteous and memorable talk was concluded, he sat down to one side. Seated to one side, the Venerable Sāriputta said this to the Venerable Mahāmoggallāna: "Friend Moggallāna, there are these four modes of practice (paṭipadā). What four? The mode of practice that is painful with sluggish superknowledge (dukkhā paṭipadā dandhābhiññā), the mode of practice that is painful with swift superknowledge (dukkhā paṭipadā khippābhiññā), the mode of practice that is pleasant with sluggish superknowledge (sukhā paṭipadā dandhābhiññā), and the mode of practice that is pleasant with swift superknowledge (sukhā paṭipadā khippābhiññā). These, friend, are the four modes of practice. Of these four modes of practice, friend, in dependence upon which mode of practice was your mind (citta) liberated from the taints (āsava) through non-clinging?"
"Friend Sāriputta, there are these four modes of practice. What four? These, friend, are the four modes of practice. Of these four modes of practice, friend, it was in dependence upon the mode of practice that is painful with swift superknowledge that my mind was liberated from the taints through non-clinging."
