[168] Then the Venerable Mahāmoggallāna approached the Venerable Sāriputta; having approached, he exchanged greetings with the Venerable Sāriputta, and when the courteous and amiable talk was concluded, he sat down to one side. Sitting to one side, the Venerable Mahāmoggallāna said to the Venerable Sāriputta: "Friend Sāriputta, there are these four modes of practice (paṭipadā). What four? Practice that is painful with sluggish superknowledge (dukkhā paṭipadā dandhābhiññā), practice that is painful with quick superknowledge, practice that is pleasant with sluggish superknowledge, and practice that is pleasant with quick superknowledge. These, friend, are the four modes of practice. Of these four modes of practice, friend, in dependence on which mode of practice was your mind (citta) liberated from the taints (āsava) through non-clinging?"
"Friend Moggallāna, there are these four modes of practice. What four? Practice that is painful with sluggish superknowledge, practice that is painful with quick superknowledge, practice that is pleasant with sluggish superknowledge, and practice that is pleasant with quick superknowledge. These, friend, are the four modes of practice. Of these four modes of practice, friend, it was the practice that is pleasant with quick superknowledge — in dependence on this mode of practice my mind was liberated from the taints through non-clinging."
