[176] Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu endowed with faith (saddhā), rightly aspiring, should aspire thus: "May I become such as Sāriputta and Moggallāna." This, bhikkhus, is the scale (tulā), this is the measure (pamāṇa) for my bhikkhu disciples, namely, Sāriputta and Moggallāna. Bhikkhus, a bhikkhunī endowed with faith, rightly aspiring, should aspire thus: "May I become such as the bhikkhunī Khemā and Uppalavaṇṇā." This, bhikkhus, is the scale, this is the measure for my bhikkhunī disciples, namely, the bhikkhunī Khemā and Uppalavaṇṇā. Bhikkhus, a male lay follower endowed with faith, rightly aspiring, should aspire thus: "May I become such as Citta the householder and Hatthaka of Āḷavī." This, bhikkhus, is the scale, this is the measure for my male lay disciples, namely, Citta the householder and Hatthaka of Āḷavī. Bhikkhus, a female lay follower endowed with faith, rightly aspiring, should aspire thus: "May I become such as the female lay follower Khujjuttarā and Veḷukaṇṭakiyā, Nanda's mother." This, bhikkhus, is the scale, this is the measure for my female lay disciples, namely, the female lay follower Khujjuttarā and Veḷukaṇṭakiyā, Nanda's mother.
