[236] Bhikkhus, these four kammas (kamma) have been proclaimed by me after I realized them for myself with direct knowledge. What four? There is, bhikkhus, kamma that is dark with dark result (vipāka); there is, bhikkhus, kamma that is bright with bright result; there is, bhikkhus, kamma that is dark-and-bright with dark-and-bright result; there is, bhikkhus, kamma that is neither dark nor bright, with neither-dark-nor-bright result, which leads to the destruction of kamma.
And what, bhikkhus, is kamma that is dark with dark result? Here, bhikkhus, by a certain person a mother has been deprived of life, a father has been deprived of life, an arahant has been deprived of life; with a mind (citta) of hatred the blood of the Tathāgata has been shed; the Saṅgha has been divided. This, bhikkhus, is called kamma that is dark with dark result.
And what, bhikkhus, is kamma that is bright with bright result? Here, bhikkhus, a certain person abstains from the destruction of life, abstains from taking what is not given, abstains from sexual misconduct, abstains from false speech, abstains from divisive speech, abstains from harsh speech, abstains from frivolous talk; he is without covetousness, has a mind without ill will, and holds right view. This, bhikkhus, is called kamma that is bright with bright result.
And what, bhikkhus, is kamma that is dark-and-bright with dark-and-bright result? Here, bhikkhus, a certain person generates a bodily volitional formation that is both afflictive and non-afflictive … This, bhikkhus, is called kamma that is dark-and-bright with dark-and-bright result.
And what, bhikkhus, is kamma that is neither dark nor bright, with neither-dark-nor-bright result, which leads to the destruction of kamma? Therein, bhikkhus, whatever kamma is dark with dark result … This, bhikkhus, is called kamma that is neither dark nor bright, with neither-dark-nor-bright result, which leads to the destruction of kamma.
