[237] Bhikkhus, these four kinds of action (kamma) have been proclaimed by me after realizing them for myself with superknowledge (abhiññā). What four? There is, bhikkhus, action that is dark with dark result; there is, bhikkhus, action that is bright with bright result; there is, bhikkhus, action that is dark and bright with dark and bright result; there is, bhikkhus, action that is neither dark nor bright, with neither dark nor bright result, which leads to the destruction of action.
And what, bhikkhus, is action that is dark with dark result? Here, bhikkhus, a certain person generates an afflictive bodily formation (kāyasaṅkhāra) … This, bhikkhus, is called action that is dark with dark result.
And what, bhikkhus, is action that is bright with bright result? Here, bhikkhus, a certain person generates a non-afflictive bodily formation … This, bhikkhus, is called action that is bright with bright result.
And what, bhikkhus, is action that is dark and bright with dark and bright result? Here, bhikkhus, a certain person generates a bodily formation that is both afflictive and non-afflictive … This, bhikkhus, is called action that is dark and bright with dark and bright result.
And what, bhikkhus, is action that is neither dark nor bright, with neither dark nor bright result, which leads to the destruction of action? Right view (sammādiṭṭhi) … right concentration (sammāsamādhi). This, bhikkhus, is called action that is neither dark nor bright, with neither dark nor bright result, which leads to the destruction of action.
These, bhikkhus, are the four kinds of action proclaimed by me after realizing them for myself with superknowledge.
