[255] Bhikkhus, there are these four ignoble searches (anariyapariyesanā). What four? Here, bhikkhus, someone, being himself subject to aging, searches only for what is subject to aging; being himself subject to illness, searches only for what is subject to illness; being himself subject to death, searches only for what is subject to death; being himself subject to defilement, searches only for what is subject to defilement. These, bhikkhus, are the four ignoble searches.
Bhikkhus, there are these four noble searches (ariyapariyesanā). What four? Here, bhikkhus, someone, being himself subject to aging, having understood the danger (ādīnava) in what is subject to aging, searches for the ageless, unsurpassed security from bondage, Nibbāna; being himself subject to illness, having understood the danger in what is subject to illness, searches for the illness-free, unsurpassed security from bondage, Nibbāna; being himself subject to death, having understood the danger in what is subject to death, searches for the deathless, unsurpassed security from bondage, Nibbāna; being himself subject to defilement, having understood the danger in what is subject to defilement, searches for the undefiled, unsurpassed security from bondage, Nibbāna. These, bhikkhus, are the four noble searches.
