[32] Bhikkhus, there are these four bases of social solidarity (saṅgahavatthu). What four? Giving (dāna), kindly speech (peyyavajja), useful conduct (atthacariyā), and even and equal treatment (samānattatā). These, bhikkhus, are the four bases of social solidarity.
Giving, and kindly speech,
and useful conduct here,
and even and equal treatment amid the various things,
in each case as is fitting—
these are the means of solidarity in the world,
like the linchpin of a chariot rolling along.
And if these means of solidarity were not,
neither a mother on account of her child
would receive honour or veneration,
nor a father on account of his child.
But because the wise regard rightly
these means of solidarity,
therefore they attain to greatness
and are worthy of praise.
