[56] "Bhikkhus, if both wife and husband should wish to see one another in this very life and to see one another in the life to come, both should be matched in faith (saddhā), matched in virtue (sīla), matched in generosity (cāga), and matched in wisdom (paññā). Then they see one another in this very life and see one another in the life to come."
Both faithful and bountiful (vadaññū),
restrained, living by the Dhamma,
such are they, the wife and husband,
who speak words of affection to each other.
Manifold benefits accrue to them,
and comfort arises;
their enemies are left dejected
when both are matched in virtue.
Having lived by the Dhamma here,
both matched in virtue and observance,
rejoicing in the heavenly world (devaloka),
they delight, enjoying the pleasures they desire.
