[55] On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling among the Bhaggas at Suṃsumāragira, in the Bhesakaḷā Grove, the Deer Park. Then, in the morning, the Blessed One, having dressed and taking bowl and robe, approached the residence of the householder Nakulapitā; having approached, he sat down on the seat that had been prepared. Then the householder Nakulapitā and the housewife Nakulamātā approached the Blessed One; having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, they sat down to one side. Sitting to one side, the householder Nakulapitā said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, from the time the housewife Nakulamātā was brought to me — she a mere girl, I a mere boy — I am not aware of having transgressed against the housewife Nakulamātā even in mind; how then in body? Venerable sir, we wish to see one another both in this very life, and to see one another in the life to come." The housewife Nakulamātā too said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, from the time I was brought to the householder Nakulapitā — I a mere girl, he a mere boy — I am not aware of having transgressed against the householder Nakulapitā even in mind; how then in body? Venerable sir, we wish to see one another both in this very life, and to see one another in the life to come."
"Householders, if both wife and husband should wish to see one another in this very life and to see one another in the life to come, both should be matched in faith (saddhā), matched in moral conduct (sīla), matched in generosity (cāga), and matched in wisdom (paññā); then they see one another in this very life, and they see one another in the life to come."
When both are faithful and bountiful,
self-restrained, living by the Dhamma,
that wife and husband
speak loving words to one another.
Benefits in abundance accrue to them;
ease and comfort arise.
Their enemies are dejected,
when both are equal in virtue.
Having lived the Dhamma here,
both equal in virtue and observances,
delighting in the deva world,
they rejoice, enjoying the sensual pleasures they desire.
