[62] Then Anāthapiṇḍika the householder approached the Blessed One; having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, he sat down to one side. As Anāthapiṇḍika the householder was sitting to one side, the Blessed One said this to him:
"Householder, there are these four kinds of happiness that may be attained by a layperson who enjoys sensual pleasures, from time to time and on suitable occasions. What four? The happiness of ownership (atthisukha), the happiness of enjoyment (bhogasukha), the happiness of debtlessness (anaṇasukha), and the happiness of blamelessness (anavajjasukha).
"And what, householder, is the happiness of ownership? Here, householder, a clansman possesses wealth acquired by energetic striving, amassed by the strength of his arms, earned by the sweat of his brow, righteous wealth righteously gained. When he reflects, 'I possess wealth acquired by energetic striving, amassed by the strength of my arms, earned by the sweat of my brow, righteous wealth righteously gained,' he attains happiness, he attains joy. This, householder, is called the happiness of ownership.
"And what, householder, is the happiness of enjoyment? Here, householder, with wealth acquired by energetic striving, amassed by the strength of his arms, earned by the sweat of his brow, righteous wealth righteously gained, a clansman both enjoys his wealth and performs deeds of merit. When he reflects, 'With wealth acquired by energetic striving, amassed by the strength of my arms, earned by the sweat of my brow, righteous wealth righteously gained, I both enjoy my wealth and perform deeds of merit,' he attains happiness, he attains joy. This, householder, is called the happiness of enjoyment.
"And what, householder, is the happiness of debtlessness? Here, householder, a clansman owes nothing to anyone, whether little or much. When he reflects, 'I owe nothing to anyone, whether little or much,' he attains happiness, he attains joy. This, householder, is called the happiness of debtlessness.
"And what, householder, is the happiness of blamelessness? Here, householder, a noble disciple is endowed with blameless bodily action, endowed with blameless verbal action, endowed with blameless mental action. When he reflects, 'I am endowed with blameless bodily action, endowed with blameless verbal action, endowed with blameless mental action,' he attains happiness, he attains joy. This, householder, is called the happiness of blamelessness.
"These, householder, are the four kinds of happiness that may be attained by a layperson who enjoys sensual pleasures, from time to time and on suitable occasions."
Having known the happiness of debtlessness,
and recollecting too the happiness of ownership,
a mortal, enjoying the happiness of wealth,
then sees clearly with wisdom.
Seeing clearly, the wise one
knows both portions:
the other does not amount to a sixteenth part
of the happiness of blamelessness.
