[63] Bhikkhus, those families in which the mother and father are honored by the children within the home are families with Brahmā (sabrahmakāni). Bhikkhus, those families in which the mother and father are honored by the children within the home are families with the first teachers (sapubbācariyakāni). Bhikkhus, those families in which the mother and father are honored by the children within the home are families with the first devas (sapubbadevāni). Bhikkhus, those families in which the mother and father are honored by the children within the home are families with those worthy of gifts (sāhuneyyakāni).
"Brahmā," bhikkhus, is a designation for mother and father. "First teachers," bhikkhus, is a designation for mother and father. "First devas," bhikkhus, is a designation for mother and father. "Those worthy of gifts," bhikkhus, is a designation for mother and father. For what reason? Because, bhikkhus, mother and father are of great help to their children: they are their upbringers, their nourishers, the ones who show them this world.
Mother and father are called "Brahmā"
and "first teachers";
they are worthy of gifts from their children,
being compassionate toward their offspring.
Therefore the wise person should revere them
and honor them
with food and with drink,
with clothing and with bedding,
with anointing, with bathing,
and with the washing of their feet.
Because of that service
rendered to mother and father,
the wise praise him in this very world,
and after death he rejoices in heaven (sagga).
