[286] 7. Bhikkhus, those families dwell with Brahmā in which mother and father are honored by their children within the home. Bhikkhus, those families dwell with the first deities (pubbadevatā) in which mother and father are honored by their children within the home. Bhikkhus, those families dwell with the first teachers (pubbācariyā) in which mother and father are honored by their children within the home. Bhikkhus, those families dwell with those worthy of gifts (āhuneyya) in which mother and father are honored by their children within the home.
"Brahmā," bhikkhus, is a designation (adhivacana) for mother and father. "The first deities," bhikkhus, is a designation for mother and father. "The first teachers," bhikkhus, is a designation for mother and father. "Those worthy of gifts," bhikkhus, is a designation for mother and father. For what reason? Because, bhikkhus, mother and father are of great help to their children: they bring them up, they nourish them, they show them this world.
Mother and father are called "Brahmā"
and "the first teachers";
they are worthy of gifts from their children,
being compassionate toward their offspring.
Therefore the wise should revere them
and treat them with honor —
with food and also with drink,
with clothing and with bedding,
with anointing and with bathing,
and with the washing of their feet.
For that service
to mother and father,
the wise praise him in this very world,
and after death he rejoices in heaven (sagga).
